Barbaric Seax

Just finished up this 11" bladed Seax with a cow's shin bone for the handle. It was forged from 5160. The photos were taken on my 500lb anvil that measures almost 7" from side to side, just to give you a sense of scale with the blade. The blade measures 2 1/2" tall at the highest point, 1 1/4" at the narrowest. The blade is approximately 1/8" at the thickest point. It has a convex profile tapering at the edge and spine. The overall length of this piece is 19 inches.

Nessmuk Proper

This project originated while I was in Texas last August for the "Hill Country Bushcraft Rendezvous" that John of Badger Claw Leatherworks put on. Alexander Yerks, owner of Hudson Valley Handcrafts, and I flew down to see some sights, go to the meet, and hammock camp on the San Saba and Guadalupe Rivers for a week. Anyway, while down there, John, Alex and I got to talking about the old Nessmuk books. John gave me a copy as I did not have one at the time, Alex happened to have his with him, and John had an old first print version. Well it turns out that the drawing of the knife in the first print, is different and more clear than in later printings. So, after some reading, research, and brainstorming, I decided to make an accurate replica of the knife. Since this one was just a test knife, and for myself, I forged it from a cut section of a BMW M3 coil spring. I use that steel to make my hot cut chisels, punches, etc. It's some hardy stuff. It's a 5" forged blade that is about 1/8" thick at the start of it. It is handled in white tail deer antler and approximately 300 year old oak, that Henry David Thoreau is said to have paddled past. The blade has a hand rubbed finish to 400grit.

Leuku

Here is the the first Leuku I forged. I've kept it for years but never get the chance to properly use it as I have so many personal knives. It was forged from 1095. The blade is 7" long, 1 1/4" tall, and 3/16" thick. It has a forged taper to about 1/8" thick where the convex bevel starts. The handle is 4 1/2" long and is constructed of Elk stag that my grandfather shot in the mountains of Idaho. There are two pieces of stacked leather, then black walnut, two pieces of stacked leather, Eastern Hornbeam that I harvested near Fishkill NY, and the pommel is the same Elk stag. This is all held captive by a riveted tang over a US Penny.
